An ERV draws outdoor air into the building and exhausts stale indoor air through separate air passages. Inside the energy recovery core, heat and moisture can transfer between the two air streams without intentionally mixing the bulk air streams.
In winter, energy from the warmer exhaust air can help precondition incoming cold air. In summer, the cooler indoor exhaust air can help reduce the heat load of incoming outdoor air.
The recovered energy reduces the ventilation load, while filters help remove particles from the incoming air.
